I told you it was a religion!
And here you thought I was kidding. Wrongo! Now a tribunal in England confirms that belief in global warming can be a religion to some.
An executive sacked from a giant property company can claim he was unfairly dismissed because of his “philosophical belief in climate change”, a judge ruled yesterday.
In the first case of its kind, employment judge David Sneath said Tim Nicholson, a former environmental policy officer, could invoke employment law for protection from discrimination against him for his conviction that climate change was the world’s most important environmental problem.
That conviction amounted to a philosophical belief under the Employment Equality (Religion and Belief) Regulations, 2003, the judge ruled on a point of law at a pre-hearing review of an employment tribunal in London.
So there you have it. Belief in global warming is a religion!
BTW, what the heck is an “environmental policy officer”
(Thanks to Erich for the tip.)
Well maybe not tomorrow but…..
Is this another “Oops! Never mind”? You decide.
How many times have you seen the word “collapse” used lately to describe what could unfold should human-caused global warming, and more particularly warming seas, erode the West Antarctic Ice Sheet? (One metric: A Google search for “West Antarctic Ice Sheet” and “collapse” gets 29,800 hits.)
That seems like a lot. But what do I know? On the other hand, what if that “collapse” takes thousands of years to happen?
…But this paper, by David Pollard at Penn State and Robert M. DeConto of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst… ran a five-million-year computer simulation of the ice sheet’s comings and goings, using data on past actual climate and ocean conditions gleaned from seabed samples (the subject of the other paper) to validate the resulting patterns.
The bottom line? In this simulation, the ice sheet does collapse when waters beneath fringing ice shelves warm 7 to 9 degrees Fahrenheit or so, but the process — at its fastest — takes thousands of years. Over all, the pace of sea-level rise from the resulting ice loss doesn’t go beyond about 1.5 feet per century, Dr. Pollard said in an interview, a far cry from what was thought possible a couple of decades ago.
…Over all, the loss of the West Antarctic ice from warming is appearing “more likely a definite thing to worry about on a thousand-year time scale but not a hundred years,” Dr. Pollard said.
Seems like more of a thousand-year “shrug” to me. Or maybe a thousand-year “sprawl”. Certainly NOT a “collapse”. For those near the ocean as this “collapse” happens, here’s my advice: about every hundred years or so, take a step backwards.
Forget kangaroo farts, burping worms are now the rage
Who would have thought! Burping worms, that’s right, BURPING WORMS are yet another cause of global warming:
Aquatic animals that feed on lake and stream bottom sediments burp out small amounts of nitrous oxide, a potent greenhouse gas, a new study finds.
[...]
The researchers found that in a variety of aquatic environments, animals that dug in the dirt for their food did indeed emit nitrous oxide, thanks to the bacteria in the soil they ate, which “survive surprisingly well in the gut environment,” [Peter Stief, of the Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology in Germany] told LiveScience.
I didn’t even know that worms burped. Did you? Do they say “Excuse me”? And how do you suppose they collect a burp to analyze it for the offending gasses? How do they know its a burp and not a fart? (Farts are much more fun!) What’s the difference with a worm?
So many questions…
Never mind! Again 3!
It’s important to hold the global warming fear mongers accountable for their mongering. Otherwise what they say becomes part of our collective conscious of what “everyone knows”.
With that in mind, you might recall this headline from last summer:

Global warming may drop Great Lakes water levels
Coalition of sporting and environmental groups warns of dire consequences.
The article went on to go through a litany of nasty things that are going to happen RIGHT NOW if we don’t DO SOMETHING!
WASHINGTON — A report released Wednesday by an environmental group warns that unless Congress acts to curb global warming, Great Lakes water levels will drop, beaches will close more often because fierce storms will cause sewage overflows, and fish and animal populations will drop — hurting tourism and hunting.
The Healing Our Waters-Great Lakes Coalition of about 100 environmental and sporting groups highlighted its concerns in advance of next week’s expected debate in the U.S. Senate on global warming.
“Delay in confronting global warming and the protection of the Great Lakes will only make the problems worse and the solutions more costly,” concluded the report’s authors, including environmental scientist Don Scavia of the University of Michigan.
Again the assumption is that Global Warming is causing the Great Lakes to shrink. There’s no proof of that. Just an assertion. And , as always seems to be the case, they posit an imminent disater in hopes that their audience, in this case the U.S. Congress, will do what they want it to do. And do it right now. Don’t ask questions. We don’t have time for that.
So what do we know only nine months later?
Snowy and rainy winter good for Great Lakes
February 23, 2009
[...] The Detroit News reports Monday that the latest estimates from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers shows lake levels are higher in February than the year before for the second year in a row. The lakes had been declining for most of the past decade.
Disaster averted! One winter with a lot of snow and rain and the effects of global warming are overcome!
How could this happen? Maybe because Great Lakes levels are cyclical and go up and down all the time. Those of us who have lived lives spanning more that a couple of decades in the region know this. We’ve seen multiple up and down cycles long before we had Global Warming to “cause” it. But it was convenient last summer for the general ignorance of the population to be exploited to promote the Global Warming agenda.
Now that we know they were just bluffing, when do you think “The Healing Our Waters-Great Lakes Coalition” (whatever that is) and especially environmental scientist Don Scavia of the University of Michigan will be releasing the all clear? Since this news doesn’t hold to the GW story line, don’t hold your breath.
I guess PETA’s now giving out grants
What else explains this bit from our liberal friends at the AFP?
Hamburgers are the Hummers of food in global warming, scientists say.
Simply switching from steak to salad could cut as much carbon as leaving the car at home a couple days a week.
[...]
By looking at everything from how much grain a cow eats before it is ready for slaughter to the emissions released by manure, they are getting a clearer idea of the true costs of food.
Notice how we neatly get from 1) the assumption that “global warming” is happening, to 2) carbon is causing it, to 3) your choice in food is “costing” too much.
It is a safe bet that, soon, the idea that you can independently choose what you will eat everyday will no longer be “operable”. That choice, whether through taxation or regulation will be made by those much smarter than you. … say Algore or Barack Obama. You know, those people who will “help” you make the “right” decision. Because they know, much more than you do, what’s good for the entire planet.
Think not? Keep reading:
“Given the projected doubling of (global) meat production by 2050, we’re going to have to cut our emissions by half just to maintain current levels,” Pelletier said.
“Technical improvements are not going to get us there.”
That’s why changing the kinds of food people eat is so important, said Chris Weber, a professor of civil and environmental engineering at Carnegie Mellon University in Pennsylvania.
[...]
“Switching to no red meat and no dairy products is the equivalent of (cutting out) 8,100 miles driven in a car … that gets 25 miles to the gallon,” Weber said in an interview following the symposium.
It will start with “suggestions” of how to eat “right”. When that doesn’t work, as, of course, it won’t, then will come the higher taxes to “discourage” you from eating meat. When that isn’t enough, regulations will come to restrict production. With higher taxes and demand outstripping supply, prices will rise. That $5 burger will ultimately cost you $20. All in the name of a globe that isn’t warming.
Helpfully the AFP ends its “news” article with this:

Good thing the press isn’t in the tank for this crowd. …right.
Fear-mongering on steroids
This blog was first created to expose and have a good laugh at the funniest claims by the most extreme elements of those who say that global warming is not only happening but its causing all sorts of bad things to happen.
We found most of those “caused by global warming” claims to be hilarious and so absurd that we didn’t think that serious people could believe them. We’ve chronicled a host of absurd claims from the global warming true believers but never really thought that responsible people in the government of the United States would govern as if they were true.
Well now, my fellow Americans, in an object lesson that elections have consequences, I present you with President Obama’s Secretary of Energy, Steven Chu.
In a burst of intellectual clarity only he can appreciate, this is what he had to say the other day:
California’s farms and vineyards could vanish by the end of the century, and its major cities could be in jeopardy, if Americans do not act to slow the advance of global warming, Secretary of Energy Steven Chu said Tuesday.
Chu warned of water shortages plaguing the West and Upper Midwest and particularly dire consequences for California, his home state, the nation’s leading agricultural producer.
In a worst case, Chu said, up to 90% of the Sierra snowpack could disappear, all but eliminating a natural storage system for water vital to agriculture.
“I don’t think the American public has gripped in its gut what could happen,” he said. “We’re looking at a scenario where there’s no more agriculture in California.” And, he added, “I don’t actually see how they can keep their cities going” either.
In a decade that has seen an absolute decrease in global temperatures we now have a high level official in the government of the United States telling us that California won’t be able to “keep their cities going” because of “global warming”. The Global Warming Follies have become today’s absurd reality.
Lest you forget who the smart people are in this dialogue, pay attention to who Chu thinks needs to be “educated”:
In the course of a half-hour interview, Chu made clear that he sees public education as a key part of the administration’s strategy to fight global warming — along with billions of dollars for alternative energy research and infrastructure, a national standard for electricity from renewable sources and cap-and-trade legislation to limit greenhouse gas emissions.
He said the threat of warming is keeping policymakers focused on alternatives to fossil fuel, even though gasoline prices have fallen over the last six months from historic highs. But he said public awareness needs to catch up. He compared the situation to a family buying an old house and being told by an inspector that it must pay a hefty sum to rewire it or risk an electrical fire that could burn everything down.
“I’m hoping that the American people will wake up,” Chu said, and pay the cost of rewiring.
Wake up America! You poor stupid fools. If you could only see the truth we could save the “Planet”!
What arrogance.
But these are now the people that set American policy. Welcome to the alternate universe.
So who is this person predicting our doom? Surely he’s credentialed at the highest level in the science he’s discussing. After all he talks so confidently and authoritatively about the dire consequences we will soon experience as a result of “global warming”. He also controls the levers of power in government to force you to bend to his will.
Well, I don’t want to disappoint you but he’s just parroting someone else’s thoughts because:
Chu is not a climate scientist. He won his Nobel for work trapping atoms with laser light.
Ok. He is a REALLY smart guy. (Who among your friends could trap atoms with laser light?) I think I’m a smart guy. Maybe not as smart as Chu. But just like him, I am not a climate scientist.
What does that mean? It means he doesn’t know more than any well read person knows on the topic. Maybe less. And yet he is predicting the end of life as we know it in California and he’s in a position to direct public policy to implement changes in our government to reflect those bizarre views.
We are supposed to believe this stuff? Of course. Its “change you can believe in”. …..Heaven help us!
How long before “should” becomes “must’?
The British government’s “Green Advisor” doesn’t like kids. At least not more than two per family.
COUPLES who have more than two children are being “irresponsible” by creating an unbearable burden on the environment, the government’s green adviser has warned.
And how does he think that this terrible tragedy should be dealt with? That’s the scary part.
Jonathon Porritt, who chairs the government’s Sustainable Development Commission, says curbing population growth through contraception and abortion must be at the heart of policies to fight global warming.
So there you have it. Abortion is at the heart of his plan to “fight global warming”. Isn’t that precious?
What do you think will happen if persuasion to kill your children doesn’t work? I’m guessing people like Jonathon Porritt will look to China for answers. “Should” will become “must”.
Al Gore the oracle
The lawmakers gazed in awe at the figure before them. The Goracle had seen the future, and he had come to tell them about it.
That’s how Dana Milbank opens his hilarious column in today’s Washinton Post about Al Gore’s appearance before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
What the Goracle saw in the future was not good: temperature changes that “would bring a screeching halt to human civilization and threaten the fabric of life everywhere on the Earth — and this is within this century, if we don’t change.”
The treatment he received from the committee members was one of awestruck reverence as exemplified by this:
The chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, John Kerry (D-Mass.), appealed to hear more of the Goracle’s premonitions. “Share with us, if you would, sort of the immediate vision that you see in this transformative process as we move to this new economy,” he beseeched.
To see the Goracle’s answer and to read the rest of this very funny and disturbing column go to the link. You’ll laugh ’til you cry. Literally.
Another (near) disaster caused by “Global Warming”
Sometimes you just have to shake your head when, yet another, seemingly unrelated event gets blamed on “climate change” nee “global warming”. (We’ve listed some, who-wudda-thunk-it, things caused by global warming here.)
Well here’s one that even I didn’t see coming: the US Airways crash in the Hudson. That’s right, the Miracle on the Hudson was, in part, caused by our selfishly large carbon footprint. As reported by Time magazine:
While officials use radar and radio collars to track bird populations, habitat destruction and climate change have disrupted migratory patterns. Moreover, the populations of certain species of birds are increasing at rapid rates, thanks to changes in food supply.
So you see, people who unthinkingly produce more carbon than the “planet” can sustain caused ‘climate change’ which caused habitat destruction, which disrupted migratory patterns, which caused the birds to fly into the plane’s engines, which caused the crash. And there it is.
So don’t you now feel guilty about putting thos people on the plane through such a near-death experience? And what about those people on the plane? How long do you think it will take before some environmentalist wacko proclaims that the passengers deserved it by flying in the first place? Do NOT put it past them.
What I wonder is what caused that increase in food supply that caused the increase in population of Canada geese? If CC is so bad it should have caused the bird’s population to decline leading to eventual extinction. Right?
You really don’t have to wonder why journalism’s having such a tough time these days when you read stories like this.
Let’s call it the Fart Tax.
You knew it had to happen.
EPA ‘Cow Tax’ Could Charge $175 per Dairy Cow to Curb Greenhouse Gases
That’s right. A state farm bureau has calculated that each cow farts precisely $175 worth of “greenhouse gases” per year.
The New York Farm Bureau assigned a price tag to the cost of greenhouse gas regulation by the EPA in a release last month.
“The tax for dairy cows could be $175 per cow, and $87.50 per head of beef cattle. The tax on hogs would upwards of $20 per hog,” the release said. “Any operation with more than 25 dairy cows, 50 beef cattle or 200 hogs would have to obtain permits.”
Don’t laugh! Next they’ll be hooking your ass up to a meter. (So watch your bean consumption.) And, if you have a big family, you’ll have to get a permit if any of you plan on doing any farting.
